Universidle Play today's puzzle

About Universidle

Universidle is a free daily guessing game about the world's universities. Every day there are three puzzles:

  • Mystery: find a mystery university with no clue at all.
  • Classic: find a university a famous person studied at.
  • Degrees: find where they earned their bachelor's, master's and doctorate.

Each guess is compared with the answer: continent, country, city, founding year, student numbers and world ranking. The globe shows every guess, and a live ranking tells you how you did compared with everyone else who played that day.

Where the facts come from

The game includes every university in the QS World University Rankings (2023 and 2026 editions) and the Times Higher Education World University Rankings (2025 and 2026), plus some famous colleges. The ranks shown on the answer cards are from those tables.

University founding years, cities and regions come from ROR, the Research Organization Registry (public domain, CC0). For the best-known universities they were checked against Wikipedia. Each university sits on its main campus as located by its Wikipedia article, or on its campus town when the article gives no coordinates; the rest sit on their city's centre (from ROR). Student numbers are approximate: Wikipedia totals where checked, otherwise the full-time-equivalent figures published by Times Higher Education. Public or private status comes from the QS tables, uniRank and Wikipedia. The famous alumni and their degrees were checked against their Wikipedia biographies. Country borders and coastlines come from Natural Earth, and capital cities and campus towns from GeoNames (CC BY 4.0). Pictures of famous people are loaded from Wikipedia only when they are freely licensed, with their author and licence shown next to them.
